Poem: On a crowded train

On a crowded train
Somewhere between here and there
The strip light flickered like my tired eyes
People pressed in on me from all sides
Though I was alone.

On a crowded train
A sick beery stench filled the air
There were orange stains on my grubby chair
My foot sloshed through a puddle
Though it wasn’t raining.

On a crowded train
A would-be Big Brother talked of delays
Old men yelled abuse in a drunken daze
I couldn’t bear to touch the food
Though I was hungry.

On a crowded train
I had a book by my side
And looking out of the grimy window
I could see the stars
Though they’d tried to hide.
